The Pousada Convento de Belmonte was built on the ruins of Nossa Senhora da Esperança Convent which dates back to Portugal´s distant past and from where the explorer Pedro Álvares Cabral set off to discover Brazil, taking with him the statue of Senhora da Esperança.
In its décor, this modern Pousada, situated one mile south of Belmonte on the hillside of the mountain Serra da Esperança, has maintained the historical inheritance of the convent dating back to the 13th Century.
